How Cloud Computing Works

Cloud computing consists of shared virtual resources which are accessed via an application programming interface. The actual resources may be found in different locations, some inside the organisation or outside. You can get these resources from a managed or remote service provider, a pay-as-you-use center or an enterprise data center. Google is the most well known cloud service and more and more companies are realising the benefits and joining the cloud.

With the cloud users can easily access extra computer resources as and when they need them. The beauty of using cloud computing and shared resources is that you get automated, flexible management to deliver its resources to all users at all times anywhere.

Let's take an example. Say you are an executive in a large company and your responsibilities include making sure all the employers have the right hardware and software they each need to do their jobs. As well as computers you need software licences for each software each employer uses. Not everyone has the same roll in a company obviously so some will need certain software others won't. Now if you employ new staff you will then need to buy another software licence.

With cloud computing instead of installing a suite of software for each computer, you'd only need to load one application. This application would allow workers in the company to log into an online web-based service which hosts all the programs each worker would need for his or her job. It really is the perfect solution.

One of the main benefits of the cloud computing system is that there is a significant workload shift because local computers don't have to run applications which may slow your pc down. The actual network of computers that make up the cloud handles the load instead. Your computers can run at good speeds because the software is on the cloud and not on your hardrive. The only thing the user's computer needs to be able to run is the cloud computing systems interface software which can be as simple as your favourite Web browser.

Sharing the same documents is far more efficient with cloud computing. With Google Docs you can all share and update the same document from any computer anywhere around the world. So if you need to manage staff and work loads while travelling around the world it really is a no brainer. Cloud computing is what you should be doing.
